Kevin Wallace, CCIE No. 7945, is a certified Cisco instructor who holds multiple Cisco
certifications, including CCSP, CCVP, CCNP, and CCDP, in addition to multiple security
and voice specializations. With Cisco experience dating back to 1989 (beginning with a
Cisco AGS+ running Cisco IOS 7.x), Kevin has been a network design specialist for the
Walt Disney World Resort, a senior technical instructor for SkillSoft/Thomson
NETg/KnowledgeNet, and a network manager for Eastern Kentucky University. Kevin
holds a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from the University of
Kentucky. Kevin has authored multiple books for Cisco Press, including Routing Video
Mentor and TSHOOT Video Mentor, both of which target the current CCNP Routing
and Switching certification. Kevin lives in central Kentucky with his wife (Vivian) and

There is much discussion on what these changes will do to the perceived value of the CCNP certification. Others are concerned that they will be stuck with outdated study material if they only begin their studies now. History has shown that there will probably be some sort of phase-in period where both the new and old exam content will be available.

Personally, I have decided to purchase some training material anyway and continue my studies. My decisions were fueled by two major factors. First, the electronic training I purchased came with free updates. As the content of the CCNP exams changes, I will be entitled to free updates to the training material. The most important reason I choose to continue my studies is for personal advancement.

The ultimate goal of my study efforts is to obtain my CCNP certification. However, during this time I also want to build my networking knowledge and skills in order to advance myself both personally and professionally. If I study and learn a topic that is not covered on the new exams, I will still have knowledge of the topic that will no doubt come in handy at some point in my career. In my opinion, this is sometimes lost when studying for any professional certification. Many people find themselves studying just to pass the exam rather then also focusing on their personal advancement.

Long story short – I wish to progress deeper in Cisco Certs & want CCIE Certs (R&S, Security) under my belt. So i have started studying for CCNP with the same formula of Cisco Official Self Study Guides by Cisco Press. However, here are the clarifications i need on how to proceed ahead :-

1. A friend of mine told me that CCNP will be phased out in the month of Jan, 2010 and will be replaced by CCNP v6. I didn’t believe him & searched on cisco Website & found nothing that mentions the phasing part. However, to my astonishment, i did see a few 3rd party blog sites that it’s true. So, should i wait until Cisco re-vamps CCNP? or Should i pay no attention to all of these & get on with my CCNP studying?

2. Is there a specific manner in which i need to write the 4 exams for CCNP Cert? In other words, should i be starting with BSCI & then with BCMSN & ISCW.. ONT. Or can i start with BCMSN & then do BSCI?

3. What IOS would one recommend for CCNP Cert when using GNS3 (Specifically for MLS)

4. Is it advisable that i complete CCNP & then progress to CCSP? Or can i start with CCNA Security –> CCSP, until the CCNP is revamped.
